The Chilean startup Remote Waters developed a technology to recover wastewater and reuse it for irrigation, industrial processes, or toilet flushing. Their system was tested at the Mall Arauco Maipú, where it successfully reused approximately 40 liters of water per hour. Following the success of their water solution, the company is now looking to expand internationally into markets where water is expensive.
While thousands of liters of water go down the drain every day in shopping malls, a Chilean startup is looking to give it a second life. Remote Waters developed a technology that recovers water from sinks and showers for reuse in irrigation, industrial processes, or toilet flushing. Their system was tested at Mall Arauco Maipú , successfully reusing approximately 40 liters of water per hour .
The company, specializing in greywater reuse, was founded in 2018 and is now driving a new approach to water conservation focused on high-traffic infrastructure. Remote Waters projects reducing water consumption in shopping centers by at least 20% , a figure that can exceed 50% in high-traffic facilities.
“We were able to adapt our technology to the existing infrastructure without interrupting the operation of the shopping center, which allowed us to build a replicable model for other high-traffic spaces,” explains Remote Waters founder Pablo Cassorla .
The startup implemented its compact “Grey Mini” system at Mall Arauco Maipú, where it not only managed to reuse about 40 liters of water per hour , but also met “the required quality standards without affecting the normal operation of the restrooms in the premises,” according to Parque Arauco.
Their technology was selected to be tested in Startup Challenge, an innovation program driven by Parque Arauco together with INNSPIRAL, which seeks to connect startups with real challenges and validate solutions in operation.
The startup is already planning to operate outside of Chile
“The proposal is particularly relevant in a context marked by water scarcity and new regulations that require large buildings to separate and treat greywater. Furthermore, the technology incorporates circular economy principles, even reusing components from desalination processes,” the startup explains.
Following the success of its wastewater reuse system in Chile, the company is already planning international expansion, negotiating a solution for Parque Arauco shopping centers in Colombia . At the same time, Remote Waters is moving forward with projects in schools, agricultural facilities, tourism, and mining.
According to its founder, the greatest growth potential lies in markets where water is more expensive, since reusing greywater not only helps the environment but also allows for a reduction in operating costs.
