Chilean startup reuses greywater and plans to reduce water consumption in shopping centers by up to 50%.

Remote Waters developed a technology that treats and reuses greywater from showers and sinks for other uses, reducing potable water consumption. Thanks to the Startup Challenge program by Parque Arauco and INNSPIRAL, they were able to implement their system at Mall Arauco Maipú.

A Chilean startup specializing in greywater reuse is driving a new approach to water conservation in high-traffic infrastructure. Remote Waters, after developing a pilot project at Mall Arauco Maipú as part of the Startup Challenge by Parque Arauco and INNSPIRAL, projects reducing water consumption in shopping centers by at least 20%, a figure that could exceed 50% in high-traffic facilities.

The company, founded in 2018 by Pablo Cassorla, developed a technology capable of recovering water from sinks and showers for reuse in irrigation, industrial processes or toilet flushing, replacing drinking water and reducing demand on traditional networks.

The pilot project was selected for the Startup Challenge, an open innovation program run by Parque Arauco and INNSPIRAL, which aims to connect startups with real business challenges and validate solutions in operation. In this context, Remote Waters implemented its compact "Grey Mini" system at Mall Arauco Maipú, successfully reusing approximately 40 liters of water per hour and meeting the required quality standards without disrupting the normal operation of the mall's restrooms.

"We were able to adapt our technology to the existing infrastructure without interrupting the operation of the shopping center, which allowed us to build a replicable model for other high-traffic spaces," explains Pablo Cassorla, founder of Remote Waters.

The proposal is particularly relevant in a context marked by water scarcity and new regulations requiring large buildings to separate and treat greywater. Furthermore, the technology incorporates circular economy principles, even reusing components from desalination processes.

Following the results obtained in Chile, the startup is already negotiating the implementation of its solution in Parque Arauco shopping centers in Colombia, while advancing with projects in schools, agricultural facilities, tourism and mining.

According to Cassorla, the growth potential is significant in markets where the cost of water is higher, transforming greywater reuse not only into a sustainability tool, but also into an efficient alternative to reduce operational costs.

Startup Challenge 2026

Currently, Startup Challenge is keeping its call open until July 10 for startups from all over the world looking to pilot their technologies in Parque Arauco shopping centers in Chile, Peru and Colombia, following the path of success stories like Remote Waters.

In this context, at Parque Arauco, “we are committed to open innovation because we believe that the talent of startups, combined with the capabilities of a leading company in the region like Parque Arauco, generates unique value in the communities where we operate. We are looking for future strategic partners to establish their technology in the Latin American market,” says Francisco Letelier, Corporate Manager of Technology and Digital Transformation at Parque Arauco.
