The Santiago government and the Santiago-Maipo Water Fund selected ten projects that will be part of the main water security summit in Ibero-America, on August 5 and 6.
Ten innovative initiatives aimed at strengthening water security have been selected to participate in Expo Agua Santiago 2026 , the leading water security summit in Latin America, to be held on August 5 and 6. Thanks to a call for proposals promoted by the Santiago Metropolitan Government , the Metropolitan Regional Council (CORE) , and the Santiago-Maipo Water Fund , the projects will have a fully equipped booth to showcase their solutions to authorities, companies, specialists, and organizations involved in water management.
The event brought together social organizations, municipalities, public services, entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises , who presented proposals to address the water crisis through innovation, efficiency, environmental education, green infrastructure and new technologies.
Innovation to tackle the water crisis
The governor of Santiago, Claudio Orrego , highlighted the quality of the selected initiatives and the contribution they represent for the future of the region.
“These projects demonstrate that our region has the talent, innovation, and commitment to face one of the greatest challenges of our time: water security. The Santiago government will continue to promote these types of initiatives, because solutions to the water crisis require collaboration, creativity, and concrete action.”
For her part, Cristina Huidobro , general manager of the Santiago-Maipo Water Fund , valued the interest generated by the call for proposals and the potential of the proposals.
“We hope that Expo Agua Santiago 2026 will be a showcase for these initiatives to make their work visible, generate new alliances and expand their impact for the benefit of the Maipo basin and its inhabitants, especially in a context of structural drought.”
Ten projects that will make their mark at Expo Agua Santiago 2026
The initiatives were evaluated by a specialized technical committee, which considered criteria such as territorial impact, innovation, sustainability, citizen participation and contribution to regional water security .
The selected projects are:
Be Santiago: visibility of companies in the water sector.
Municipality of Maipú: Sponge Commune + SMAPA, with the Water Museum project and citizen participation.
Municipality of Vitacura: Green Infrastructure Plan.
CIREN: GeoSantiago Portal.
Pontifical Catholic University: decentralized greywater reuse system.
Red Cross: WASH solutions to strengthen community health and resilience.
Volunteers for Water: a citizen science initiative.
Instadrop: an artificial intelligence assistant specializing in irrigation management.
AQUA4D: technology for water efficiency.
Remote Waters: a circular system for reusing greywater.
The main water summit in Latin America
Expo Agua Santiago 2026 will bring together authorities, companies, academia, social organizations and national and international experts to address the main challenges related to sustainable water management and adaptation to climate change.
The meeting is organized by the Government of Santiago , the Metropolitan Regional Council , the Santiago-Maipo Water Fund and Interexpo , consolidating itself as one of the main spaces for dialogue and innovation in water security in the region.
